The Story

Built in a classroom. Ended by a back injury.

Outback Nerd started in Gladstone, Queensland, where I was teaching high school digital technology. The curriculum was dry. The students were bored. So I started recording game development tutorials โ€” pitched at my own class โ€” and put them on YouTube.

It worked. Students who struggled to focus through a textbook would sit through a 40-minute Godot tutorial if it meant building a game at the end. I moved to Doomadgee โ€” a remote Aboriginal community in Far North Queensland โ€” and kept making videos, even though internet access made them harder for my students to use.

The channel picked up over 4,600 subscribers โ€” mostly other teachers and students finding the tutorials through search. But the videos were always for my students first. When teaching stopped, the channel stopped too.

A worsening back injury ended my teaching career. Without a classroom to make the videos for โ€” and with YouTube paying close to nothing for educational content โ€” the effort no longer made sense. The channel is archived, not deleted. Every tutorial still works.
